Atrial fibrillation affects as many as 6 million Americans and has become the second leading cause of stroke. Previously, the only available treatments were medicines and blood thinners that were only partially effective. New procedures have been developed that offer patients a chance for a cure, prevention of stroke and a life without blood thinners. The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Center for Atrial Fibrillation has developed a minimally invasive Hybrid Maze that combines the advantages of minimally invasive surgery with catheter ablation. Richard Lee, MD will review the complications of atrial fibrillation and the new treatment advances offered at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.
